chopper 2 down at 880 and 237. highway patrol says just before 11:00 this morning, a car crashed into center median and caught fire. we have confirmed that one person inside that car has died. again, it happened to the south bound 880 off ramp to 237. you can see the traffic backed up in the area and miles beyond the connector ramp from 237 to south bound 880 is closed and is expected to stay closed at least another hour. california gas prices jump $.20 overnight and in many spots, $5 bill will get you just one gallon of gas. it may not even get you that in the coming days. live in san jose with reaction from the roadways. >> reporter: we're here at this gas station where it costs 4.63 a gallon for regular unleaded. that's the higher side because

the record was set in june 2008 when the average was 4.59 a gallon. we are poised to break that average next week. prices are getting closer to $5. it's no surprise that it is not sitting well with drivers. according to the fuel gauge report the average price of regular unleaded a week ago was $4.16 a gallon. yesterday it was $4.38. overnight it increased to $4.54 a gallon. >> funny that the prices are going up with the election four weeks away. i don't know what's going on. >> reporter: analysts say it stem from his supply problems, refine era is still producing at reduced capacity. gasoline inventories have been at the lowest in more than ten years. drivers say they feel powerless. >> as a consumer, you know, you hope the price you pay is based

on the market driven mechanism rather than somebody trying to jackup the price. >> there is a lot of reserves around. i don't know why they continue do this. blaming it on production and shut down refineries and problem with the gas lines. >> reporter: analysts say this price hike isn't normal. usually prices go down after labor day because gas stations switch to less expensive gas than what is used during summer. >> this is a short term trend. gas prices are going up because of specific issues. until the issues are resolved within refineries we still do not know for how long we will continue to see increase. >> reporter: gas station owners are in los angeles have shut down pumps rather than charging higher prices so they could break even. reporting live from san jose,. >> thank you for that report. you can track the latest gas

a tragedy like this from happening again. take a close look at the mexican free tail bat because this is the type of bat authorities say lead to the death of the 34 year old man. >> between up to 200 bats are found positive each year. >> reporter: health officials say the victim likely got rabies when he touched a bat found on the ground in march. >> a bat was flopping on the ground and acting weird. another individual picked up the bat with a plastic bag. the gentleman who died of rabies went over and stuck his hand in the plastic bag and most likely was bitten. >> reporter: rabies symptoms don't usually show up until two to six months later and three months after the incident the victim started developing symptoms while traveling abroad. 23 days later he died. >> once symptoms develop, rabies is universally fatal. the key is if you have been ex

posed to a wild animal, if you are concerned about having saliva contacted or being bitten by a wild animal, seek medical attention immediately. >> reporter: the 34 year old victim who has not been identified traveled on eight flights through several countries, 59 have been identified as possibly being exposed, 23 have been treated. officials say theoretically it is possible to get rabies from another person through saliva or tears but the message was focused on letting people know about our area and california. three tested positive for rabies this year. while a bat bite can feel like a bee sting, this man's story is a reminder that rabies, especially after those symptoms come, is almost always deadly. play off fever today in san francisco as giants hold a rally outside of att park, what the team is doing to get fans fired up before the post season.
